Chapter Six
Sadie
Seeing Kevin again was a little more overwhelming than I thought it would be, and it brought forth a range of emotions that I didnât expect. I hadnât seen him in five months, and I thought I never would.
Trust me; I didnât want to approach him in the store because I knew I would regret it. I fought with myself not to talk to him, but when I saw him holding the same bottle of wine we had drunk in his hotel suite in Houston, it was like a sign from the Universe or something.
A sign for what? I still didnât know.
It only made me confused again, and I started to question everything I had tried to convince myself of in the past months.
Kevin was a high-profile lawyer who was extremely wealthy and successful. I couldnât help but look him up on the internet. The guy is a billionaire. He could have any woman he wanted, and I bet they were practically falling at his feet at the drop of a hat. I didnât belong in his world.
I knew this, and I had been telling myself that for the last few months, yet looking into his hazel eyes and remembering the way he made me feel that night completely dulled the clear picture I had painted in my mind.
Memories of him filled my mind. Mmm, he smelled so good of warm spicy vanilla mixed with musk and earthy sandalwood. His strong yet soft hands felt so good on my skin. His face was so damn sexy with day-old stubble, and his pecs were so inviting and out of this world.
âI think youâre over-stirring that pot, Sadie.â
My musings were interrupted by Nateâs voice, standing on the other side of the counter. I found myself back in my kitchen, with a ladle in my hand in front of the stove. I look down at the pot of stew, sighing at myself.
âIâm sorry,â I said. âI told you it wasnât a good idea for me to cook.â
âYou donât have to be sorry. It still looks edible.â
I looked at him, and my brow furrowed.
Nate, who I have only been dating for a few weeks now, was a sweet guy. He was kind and treated me with the respect I had always wanted and deserved.
Right?
I enjoyed his company, and he had a goofy sense of humor, always making me laugh. He was also very patient with me when it came to intimacy, and he probably had no idea how much that meant to me. But something was missing.
Heâs not Kevin. I didnât feel about him the way I felt about Kevin.
âYouâre being too nice.â
He walked over to me and looked in the pot.
âI donât know if itâs fixable.â
âAnything can be fixed, Sadie,â he told me, gently stroking my back.
I shrugged and turned away from him.
In the end, we ordered pizza to replace the brown gloop I unknowingly created in my pot and spent the evening on the couch watching a silly comedy.
After the movie, I walked to the kitchen and switched on the kettle for coffee.
